Fishburne Military School

Founded in 1879, Fishburne Military School is the oldest private military school in Virginia. The school is proudly situated in the center of historic Waynesboro, Virginia.

Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.

The mission of Fishburne Military School is to provide each cadet with a sound academic foundation, a healthy mental and physical environment, and leadership training for a better understanding of the obligations of honor, citizenship, and self-discipline.

From the time Professor Fishburne founded our military school for boys and continuing through present day, the faculty, staff and administration have worked to maintain the high ideals and traditional values necessary to provide our Corps of Cadets with quality instruction. We provide a caring, structured environment which promotes personal growth.

With an enrollment of about 200 students in grades 7 through 12, we also offer non-boarding education to eligible local residents. Our Fishburne Military School cadets receive 24-hour school supervision and may earn weekend passes and leave upon request and consideration. Academic emphasis, an 8:1 student-teacher ratio and structure are all a part of what makes Fishburne Military School a fulfilling student life experience.

From the moment a Fishburne Cadet matriculates until the time he strides proudly across the graduation stage, the FMS Mission permeates every aspect of his experience. Academic achievement, athletic participation, attention to detail, time-management development, personal accomplishment and pride are the direct benefits of the Fishburne Mission.

Prestige

Fishburne prides itself on keeping the U.S. Army JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction status for 90 consecutive years. In addition to that honor, the Gothic revival style barracks are on the National Register of Historic Places. These barracks are triangular in shape and open in the center. They house boys rooms as well as offices for staff and faculty.

Students

The all-male school offers students boarding and day attendance options. In addition to their well-respected academic offering, the school has a Raider Team, two drill teams and more than 10 different athletic programs.

Both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools accredit the school. The school follows the U.S. Army JROTC program.

Fishburne accepts students in grades 7 through 12 and offers a postgraduate program for those who seek to enrich their grades and SAT scores before entering college.

School Offering

The school mascot is the Caisson which represents all they try to instill in their students. This is evident in the 100 percent college acceptance rate among graduates. The school dedicates itself to each student offering an astonishing low student-teacher ratio and assigning each student an advisor. The school is best known for its military performance with the Raider Team having been invited to participate in the JROTC 4th Brigades 2013 Best of the Best Raider competition.

Admissions

Admission requires contact with the admissions team, completion of an application packet, and a visit to the school is highly recommended. Enrollment is limited to 200 boys making it somewhat difficult to get in. Fishburne offers a rolling acceptance program for applicants. This provides students the opportunity to transfer in without waiting for a new semester to start. Once accepted, students are eligible to participate in the summer flight training courses which operate as a joint venture with the Waynesboro Eagle’s Nest Airport.
