Valley Forge Military Academy and College is composed of three fully accredited schools, a middle school (grades 7-8), a high school (grades 9-12), and a two-year military junior college. Each of the schools offers commuting and residential options.

With regard to the College, Valley Forge Military College – The Military College of Pennsylvania™ (VFMC) is a private, co-educational, two-year military junior college. Established in 1935, VFMC’s mission is to prepare educated, responsible, self-disciplined young men and women to transfer to quality four-year colleges and universities, with the personal motivation and time management skills they need to succeed.
VFMC offers programs leading to the Associate of Arts degree, the Associate of Science degree, or the Associate in Business Administration. History of Valley Forge
The Academy was founded in 1928 and was a single building school located in Devon, Pennsylvania. The school relocated to Wayne, Pennsylvania due to a fire that destroyed the original campus. The Academy’s original traditions and uniforms were modeled after the American Revolutionary War. Many of the buildings on campus are named after leaders such as George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, Anthony Wayne, and Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben. In the 1950s the Academy shifted to reflect British uniforms and traditions with West Point influences. Many of these traditions continue today.
Academic excellence is one of five cornerstones at Valley Forge. Specific emphasis is placed on student’s success in the classroom. As a college preparatory leadership institute, Valley Forge seeks to educate, train, and equip students for excellence in college and future career success through a values-based, rigorous academic curriculum, focused on critical thinking, problem solving, and professionalism.
Small class sizes provide students with access to their teachers during class and during evening study hall, in addition to other instructional support opportunities.
As a college preparatory high school, VFMA students are able to enroll in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. For high achieving high school students, VFMA also provides students the opportunity to earn transferable college credit and experience actual college classes through VFMC.

VFMAC competes athletically with other schools and colleges and is a member of the PIAA and the NJCAA.
Application and Tuition
Acceptance to the Academy and to the College is competitive. Applicants should have a record of academic accomplishment and letters of recommendation for the Academy and SAT or ACT scores for the College. Applicants must fill out an application form and are encouraged to schedule a personal tour and an interview. Fall semester deadline is in August and Spring semester deadline is in December.
Offering flexibility, the College and the Academy provide students and families the option to commute or to board for 5 or 7-days.
Tuition, room and board, and basic services fees for Academy residential students, which includes uniforms, laundry, equipment and haircuts is $39,885. For residential students in grades 9th-12th it is $41,385 a year. Tuition, meals, and basic services for day students in the Academy is $26,305 a year.

Valley Forge is one of only five military junior colleges and offers a direct commission into the army after only two years of study (through the army’s Early Commissioning Program). In essence, students at Valley Forge can begin their military indoctrination at a very early age and carry it through college.
The school offers a very intimate atmosphere due to the small number of students (compared with larger institutions) on campus. In total, Valley Forge has about 600 students, with a little over half of these being enrolled in the college.
Like most military schools, students are a part of a corps of cadets and abide by a strict, no-nonsense honor code. It’s interesting to note that the corps of cadets is described as almost completely autonomous. By this, it is meant that the student leaders within the corps are responsible for the day-to-day administration, discipline, training, etc. of the other students.
Cadets are required to live on campus and follow a very structured daily routine: formation, breakfast, cleaning details, academic classes until lunch and then more classes until mid-afternoon.
After classes, students participate in athletics and such, winding down to mandatory study halls from 7:30-9:30 PM. While this is fairly standard for any military school, Valley Forge has some unique characteristics that are wholly their own.
One is that unlike other military schools, Valley Forge follows very distinctive British traditions. In fact, they are the only school in the U.S. that maintains British Drill and military ceremonies. Almost the school’s entire faculty is either active duty or retired military personnel from both the United States military and the British military.
Valley Forge is also one of the few military schools in the nation that maintains a mounted battalion and that caters to all five branches of the U.S. military and all five service academies.

St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy is a private, prestigious, coed preparatory school with a focus on leadership development and college preparation. All students adhere to a regimented system of education, along with participating in mandatory athletic programs. The very well structured, military styled environment at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy shapes young men and women, and helps them to reach their full potential.
The goal of St. John’s Northwestern is to develop good citizens who understand basic values like teamwork, integrity, a good work ethic, honesty, and critical thinking. Great Emphasis Is Placed On Academics
St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy places a great amount of emphasis on academic excellence. Coursework is challenging and study and hard work are mandatory. Class ratios are about nine students for every teacher. This exceptional student to teacher ratio allows students to receive more individualized instruction and help for any subjects they might be struggling with.
All students follow a military styled structure including wearing uniforms which display rank of students, similar to the military. Students work hard to excel and to earn rank, which helps to instill a good work ethic into them. All students can take courses that are advanced and can lead them to earn college credits. This helps to keep them engaged. It also helps them to always feel as if their coursework is challenging without being overwhelming.
Athletics Encourage Good Health And Foster Teamwork
The athletic program at SJNMA has helped to teach students the value of teamwork, discipline, and training since 1884. The school teams are known as Lancer’s and the school colors are red and purple. Sports are available to all students at the middle school, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels. Athletic participation helps to promote an active lifestyle, which can lead to better health throughout life. It also helps to develop good leadership qualities in young men.
Sports that students can choose from include standard sports like soccer, football, baseball, basketball and track & field. In addition, they can also choose from other interesting athletic pursuits like swimming, cross-country, wrestling, riflery, tennis, lacrosse, hockey, and golf. There is a nine-hole golf course on the campus of St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, which is also open to the public.

Kenosha Military Academy is a comprehensive choice public high school. Students enrolled in the Kenosha Military Academy program take part in intensive JROTC training. Students graduate with an advantage when being considered for collegiate ROTC programs.
Students enrolled in Kenosha Military Academy also receive priority when they are being considered for ROTC scholarships, no matter what branch of service they are interested in. The Kenosha Military Academy is known as a feeder school for college ROTC programs. Today’s students are developed into tomorrow’s leaders at KMA.
Uniforms Are Part Of The Program
Students enrolled at KMA are given Class A Army uniforms at no cost to wear. This distinguishes them from all other students at Indian Trail High School. Students take part in exercises and earn rank as they move through required courses. Their rank is displayed on their uniforms just like it is in the military. Students become accustomed to earning rankings based on their achievements. This gives them an excellent foundation to enter military service after graduation if that’s what they decide to do.

Since Indian Trail is a public high school, students come from all walks of life and all backgrounds. This adds to the diversity of the school. ACADEMICS – While in the KMA, students take four years of Leadership Education and Training (LET) classes, the curriculum of which is designed and sponsored by the United States Army. ATHLETICISM – The Western Ideal is summarized as “a healthy mind in a healthy body.” The KMA encourages overall health, asking students to work on maintaining their height-weight along military lines and encouraging students to achieve greater physical fitness levels by offering weekly physical training outside normal gym classes as well as additional extracurricular opportunities to excel at athleticism.
LEADERSHIP – Leadership is a skill that will stand out in every walk of life, military or otherwise. The KMA requires students to seek self-improvement every day and in every way; first by learning self-leadership and then going on to improve as leaders by rising through the KMA ranks – taking on more and more responsibility until leading is second nature to them.
Due to the intensive training they receive in the KMA, students are given an edge over others interested in pursuing careers in the military or going on to college ROTC programs. To start with, the KMA is a recognized feeder school for Marquette University’s ROTC program. Students in this program are also given advanced consideration for ROTC scholarships in all branches of service.

Finally, students in the KMA are distinguished from other students at Indian Trail through their Class A army uniforms, provided at no cost for each student in the academy. Virginia Military Institute, or VMI, was the first state supported military college in the United States. Today it continues to produce cadets who possess a strong academic background along with military training. Located on 134 acres, of which 12 are designated as a National Historic District, in Lexington, Virginia, VMI is steeped in history as it continues its dual mission of military training and education in the twenty-first century. Graduates leave VMI for careers in both the civilian and military world.
History of VMI
Founded in 1839 on the site of an arsenal, VMI is forever linked with General Thomas Jackson, better known as Stonewall Jackson, who is buried in Lexington. He joined the faculty in 1851 as an instructor in natural philosophy, or physics, and remained at VMI until April 1861 when he joined the army of the Confederate States of America. He remains a large presence on campus with the cadets passing his statute on a daily basis.
The class of 2016 at VMI consists of 508 cadets. A total of 2,146 individuals applied to be part of that class. Of those 2,146, VMI accepted 968 applicants with 52% of those enrolling. The class includes 462 males and 46 females. Just over 52% of the class is from Virginia.
Academics and Education
Academics at VMI are focused on a limited number of majors with emphasis on math, science and engineering. The 14 majors offered include applied mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering and computer and information science. Other majors available to cadets are economics and business, English and fine arts, psychology, history, modern languages and cultures and international studies and political science.
VMI is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Its engineering program is recognized by ABET, its chemistry department by ACS and its school of economics and business by AACSB. All majors lead to either a B.A. or B.S. undergraduate degree. Approximately 90% of cadets graduate in four years.
Athletics & Sports
Athletics are a big part of VMI. The school sponsors 18 intercollegiate sports including football, men’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, rifle, cross country and swimming. The school is a member of the Big South Conference. The athletic teams at VMI are known as Keydets although the actual mascot is a Kangaroo.
VMI offers cadets the opportunity to be part of Air Force, Navy and Army ROTC. These programs lead to commissioning as an officer in the United States Armed Forces.
Cost of Education
The fee structure at VMI covers everything but books. It includes living in the barracks with 21 meals per week provided along with clothing, laundry, medical services, athletics and haircuts. The total cost for the academic year 2012-2013 for residents of Virginia is $21,768. Non-residents pay a fee of $41,744. Other than books there are no other expenses.
An education at VMI is the opportunity to experience a special place that offers great academics along with military training that will equip the graduate for either a civilian or military career.
Randolph-Macon Academy (R-Ma) is a private college preparatory, military structured, learning facility that has been in continuous operation since 1892. The school, located in Front Royal, VA, is approximately 69 miles from Washington, DC. The school has dual affiliations; one with the United Methodist Church and the other with the United States Air Force. The academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.
R-Ma has been co-ed since 1974. The institution’s educational and dormitory facilities are divided between a middle school, grades 6-8, and an upper school, grades 9-12. The dormitories are not co-ed, remaining as separate male and female buildings. The academy has a 23% foreign student population, but English is the only language allowed to be spoken outside of the dormitory areas. The only exemption is for the foreign language classes taught in German and Spanish. The R-Ma school is not a special education school and does not accept students with learning disabilities.
Educational Structure and Principles
The academy has the goal and mission to teach the cadets how to be successful through the use of education, civic responsibility, personal character and leadership development in preparation for life’s challenges. This military school stands alone among other college-prep military schools by having a flight training program on the curriculum. R-Ma requires mandatory membership in the AFJROTC program for all upper school cadets and Falcon Foundation students, as well as participation in either inter-scholastic or intramural athletics. The school’s mascot is the Randolph-Macon Academy Yellow Jacket wasp.
Falcon Foundation cadets have already graduated high school and have already qualified for the United States Air Force Academy. But, for one reason or another, their attendance at the Air Force Academy has been delayed for one year. During the one year wait, they can enroll as R-Ma post graduate cadets. After an intensive two week military training course, Falcons obtain an AFJROTC military rank and serve as a squad or flight adjutant leader responsible for up to 100 fellow cadets.
The median cost for one year at Randolph-Macon as a boarding student is $32,286 with a higher cost for foreign students. The median cost for a day student is $16,166 with a higher cost for foreign students. The annual price is expensive but is still less costly than other similarly aligned preparatory military schools. There are a number of scholarships and endowments available for qualified students. The school’s admittance application process is rigid but not overly strict. The school has an 86% acceptance rate from all of the applicants.
Randolph-Macon Academy is recognized as one of the best military schools with average SAT scores of 1485 and ACT scores of 21. 99% of the graduating population is accepted into higher level educational institutions. Military service is not a requirement for the academy graduates, but those graduates that proceed on to the Air Force Academy are required to serve in the military for several years.

Located in Chatham, Virginia, Hargrave Military Academy is a privatized boarding school affiliated with the Baptist General Association of Virginia. It was originally founded as the Chatham Training School in 1909. The school was renamed in 1925 in honor of a local farmer, J. Hunt Hargrave.
The academy accepts only male students in grades 7 through 12 but offers continuing education opportunities for post-graduate students seeking to improve their educational and athletic abilities to better prepare for college acceptance. Students seeking a jump start to their college career can enroll in dual-enrollment college courses through Danville Community College.
In 2011 the average SAT score for a Hargrave student was 1515 and the school boasted a 99 percent college acceptance rate from 2003 to 2011.

With an average of 12 students in each class, students receive personalized attention which helps keep their grades and morale high.
The school received accreditation through both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – Council on Accreditation and School Improvement via AdvancED and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. These standards are maintained by the schools governing board of trustees which is made up mostly of academy alumni.
Sports Teams and Athletic Programs
The school primarily focuses on college-preparation in a military-structured setting but is also well known for its basketball and football teams. The schools’ mascot is a tiger, representing the school colors of orange and black. For a more disciplined sport, the academy is home of The Camden Rifles, an elite drill unit formed in 1951. Academically, the academy’s Christian values based military preparatory program is what the school is best known for.
There is a moderately difficult application process, which includes a detailed application and submission of current transcripts and academic recommendations. The application is then reviewed by admissions personnel who make sure the academy and your student are a good match for each other.
Franklin Military Academy is a coeducational secondary school within the Richmond City Public School District. Established in 1980, the academy is the first public military school in the United States. The school uses the military model to prepare students to excel academically and professionally after graduation.
In 2012, Franklin Military Academy received a bronze ranking on the U.S. News and World Report’s listing of the best high schools.
In addition to military training, students participate in multiple sports, including football, track, basketball, and baseball at Franklin Military Academy.
One course in the student schedule is dedicated to military science, and the rest of the schedule is filled with academic courses. Some electives are available, including Spanish, chorus, band, art, and business and information technology.
Franklin Military School (FMS) opened its doors to the students of Richmond in August 1980. The school is presently in its fourth location, housed in the Onslow Minnis Building, 701 North 37th Street, Richmond, Virginia 23223. Franklin is the first public military school in the nation and offers an alternative to the regular high school program. The Franklin program is designed to allow all students to experience a regular academic course of study while participating in a Junior Reserve Officer Training Program. There are also two other alternative and five comprehensive high schools in the Richmond Public School System.
Superintendent Richard Hunter and the Richmond School Board first began discussing the idea of a public military academy in 1976. The first step was the formation of a committee to help determine whether a public military school might help improve discipline and general attitudes of the students. The parent/student survey committee indicated that the community supported the idea. The next step was for the school board and superintendent to approach the United States Army for its views on establishing a public military school. During a four-year planning process, the idea of a military school was well received. It was decided by the school board in 1980 to convert an unoccupied school as the building for the newly established military school. The building that was selected and renovated was known as the old Franklin School.
Special attention was given to the selection of administrators, faculty and staff. The first commandant was Colonel W. Frank Combo, who had eighteen years of experience as a teacher in both public and military schools. The newly selected teaching staff consisted of experienced and veteran teachers. Two members to the teaching staff along with the two senior military instructors, that were added, had experience in the army. It was decided that the faculty of twenty three would be addressed by honorary military titles, as well as, wear military uniforms and participate in drills.
In the process of preparing for the opening of school, students had to apply and were screened before being admitted. The school opened in August of 1980 with only 130 ninth grade students and each year there after a new class of ninth graders would be added. In 1983, a complete high school program was formed consisting of grades 9-12.
Franklin Military School offers students a strict regimented military style discipline program. The program provides for individualized instruction with a teaching ration 15:1. All students are enrolled in Military Science for one class period. The academic courses accounts for the remaining classes of a child’s schedule. The students may also enroll in the following elective courses: Spanish, French, Russian, German, Advanced Placement Statistics, Business and Information Technology, Art, Band, Guitar, and Chorus. The students are encouraged to participate in other educational and cultural experiences offered by Richmond Public Schools and the community.
There is a very small transfer or dropout rate at Franklin. Most of the students feel that the educational experience offered is unique and seem to enjoy school life. Positive feelings are manifested in their participation in drill teams, athletic events, school clubs and other school and community organizations. Franklin is a natural channel for students interested in pursuing a military career.
Military training is provided by the Junior Reserve
Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC). In addition to the military-oriented education, the academy also hosts a public safety program that corresponds with programs used by police and firefighters. This program is connected to the public safety programs within the local community.
Students wishing to attend Franklin Military Academy must complete and submit an application to the guidance counselor at their current school. The guidance counselor forwards the application and supplemental materials directly to the academy. The acceptance decision is based on multiple factors, including teacher recommendations, a guidance counselor recommendation, a clean disciplinary record, and the student’s academic history.
Graduates of Franklin Military Academy have been awarded ample scholarship money and recognition. Two recent graduates have been named the 2012 Gates Millennium Scholar and the 2009 Bank of America Student Leader.
Commonly referred to as FUMA (foo-mah), Fork Union Military Academy is located in the village community known as Fork Union, Virginia. This location provides peace and respite from all the hustle of the city and the pressures of everyday life. To further promote positive attitudes, the academy emphasizes the importance of positive peer pressure, or leading by example.
Baptist minister Dr. William E. Hatcher founded the academy in 1898 to fill the need of education for students aged 14 to 17. Fork Union adopted its current independent military curriculum in 1902 and has no affiliation with any branch of the US military. Fork Union began its affiliation with the Baptist Association of Virginia in 1913 when it became an all-male institution.
The academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. As part of the academic and military curriculum, the academy prides itself on teaching structure, discipline, and Christian values. Boys, grades 6-12 and postgraduate courses participate in 10 different athletic programs, multiple clubs, organizations and the academy rifle team.
Athletic teams sport the Blue Devils as their mascot. Participation in these extracurricular activities is not required but offers a change of pace from daily academic life.

Structure & Discipline
The goal of the military system at Fork Union Military Academy is not to turn young men into soldiers. Indeed, we have no affiliation with any branch of the armed forces. Rather, our goal is simply to use the best aspects of the military system to teach young men the value of being responsible for their actions, of doing on their own the work that needs to be done, and of working with others toward a common purpose.

…and we have superimposed these values on our living and learning environment — in the classroom, the locker room, the dining room, and the dorm room.
At Fork Union Military Academy, our cadets are expected to tuck in their shirts, to say “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am”, to stand when a lady enters, and to open doors for others. Our cadets learn to look others in the eye, address others with respect, and speak with confidence. Our cadets are taught to “sweep in the corners” — that is, they are expected to pay attention to detail, to be accountable for their actions, and to set high standards for themselves and others.
Our environment of structure and discipline helps to limit distractions and encourage students to focus on achievement in academics, athletics, and personal growth.
The Academy’s student body is organized as a Cadet Corps led by cadet officers who serve as members of the battalion staff, as company commanders, platoon leaders, and in other leadership roles.
The Upper School companies include four rifle companies (A, B, C, and E), the Retan Rifles honor company (home of the Academy’s color guard and precision drill team), and Band Company.
The Middle School is organized as a battalion with two separate military companies. The Middle School battalion marches in full dress parades on campus with the Upper School battalion during special occasions and according to the regular Sunday parade schedule during the spring of the year.
Military discipline is a constant at Fork Union Military Academy. Cadets abide by regulations of face the consequences of improper choices. Conduct expectations are made clear, and cadets are treated fairly and consistently. The primary goal of FUMA’s disciplinary system is to encourage responsible behavior while demanding that young men treat each other with courtesy and respect.
The Commandant of Cadets oversees the daily operation of the Cadet Corps and the proper enforcement of regulations through the demerit system. A cadet who receives demerits during a given month (in excess of the number allowed without penalty) must serve a penalty tour for each demerit received. This usually means a period of time spent marching during what would otherwise be his free time.
In contrast, cadets who maintain their demerit count below specific levels enjoy certain privileges, and are able to take full benefit of their free time on campus for activities, rest, or recreation.
A cadet who shows responsibility, consistent good conduct, and leadership potential can earn rank – first within his company, and perhaps later at the battalion level. Cadet officers lead their platoons and companies under the direct adult supervision of the Commandant and the members of his staff, known as Tactical Officers. These cadet officers learn valuable lessons about responsibility, the use of authority, discretion, and leading by example.
In other schools, young people might gain status based on their popularity, athletic ability, or the clique they hang out with. At FUMA, rank is earned based on true merit and achievement.

The campus of Fork Union Military Academy provides a sanctuary from so many of the stresses of and pressures that confront young men today.

Positive Peer Pressure
The siren call of negative peer pressure is a strong force in the lives of young men, but at the Academy, the balance of power is shifted and positive peer pressure is dominant. The Cadet Corps is led by a network of cadet officers – young men who have achieved rank by consistent good conduct and self-discipline. These young men are expected to lead by example. The vast majority of the Cadet Corps obey the rules almost all of the time. In fact, it is not unusual for a significant percentage of cadets to complete the year without ever having to march a penalty tour.
Zero Tolerance Policy
Drugs and alcohol are dangerous influences on a young man’s life and we take very seriously our responsibility to provide a school setting safe from such problems. Cadets found to be in possession or under the influence of drugs or alcohol are subject to immediate dismissal. The use of tobacco is also forbidden on campus.
Cadet Honor System
Cadets are bound by their commitment not to lie, cheat, or steal, nor to tolerate such behavior by others. When a cadet violates this trust, he must face a council of his peers. Penalties for Honor Code violations are determined by the Commandant, upon the recommendation of the Honor Council.

Founded in 1879, Fishburne Military School is the oldest private military school in Virginia. The school is proudly situated in the center of historic Waynesboro, Virginia.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.

Fishburne prides itself on keeping the U.S. Army JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction status for 90 consecutive years. In addition to that honor, the Gothic revival style barracks are on the National Register of Historic Places. These barracks are triangular in shape and open in the center. They house boys rooms as well as offices for staff and faculty.
The all-male school offers students boarding and day attendance options. In addition to their well-respected academic offering, the school has a Raider Team, two drill teams and more than 10 different athletic programs.
Both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools accredit the school. The school follows the U.S. Army JROTC program.
Fishburne accepts students in grades 7 through 12 and offers a postgraduate program for those who seek to enrich their grades and SAT scores before entering college.

Student Profile Overview
The school has a diverse population where about 51 percent of students come from different states outside New England. A tradition of innovation
There are only a few schools that have a legacy as long or as influential as Norwich’s. There were only a few schools in existence in 1819 when Alden Partridge started the institution. But Norwich’s legacy isn’t great just because of longevity—more important is what the organization has done in its lifetime.
Norwich has always been the innovator in American Education. Actually the American System of Education startedat Norwich. Yes, the most advanced and successful education system in the world, the education students throughout the world seek, the education system that has literally transformed civilization into modern society, started at Norwich.
That’s a big accomplishment. But it’s certainly not the only one, as Norwich does not rest on its laurels. This institution has a mission, a job to do, and the people of Norwich take it seriously. More firsts: Sometimes Norwich does things that are unconventional or buck the status quo. In 1974, we admitted women to the Corps of Cadets. That does not sound like a big deal now, but in 1974, it was downright revolutionary. It has proved a difficult and unpopular move for other military colleges, but Norwich did it right—and it was the right thing to do.
Norwich is accustomed to being first, a tradition that continues today. Norwich was one of the first institutions—and certainly the smallest—to receive the National Security Agency’s designation as a Center of Excellence in Information Security Education. Why? Because that is what the nation desperately needed and will need for many years to come.
Norwich was the first private college in the nation to teach engineering. Why? Because that is what the nation needed in 1819. While other institutions of higher education concentrated on classical studies, Norwich was marching its students out into the field to study civil engineering and other practical sciences, as well as literature and modern languages. The young nation needed bridges, agricultural innovation, graduates who were savvy in commerce and about the world, and people who could lead militarily if needed. Norwich met all of those needs in a time when such a curriculum was considered experimental. But Norwich’s system of balanced and useful education soon became the norm—in fact, the pattern—for the great American System of Education.
In 1820 our collegiate military band was created, the first of its kind in the nation and the oldest to date. Norwich also has the distinction of being the birthplace of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). In addition, Norwich was the one of the first schools in the nation to admit international students.

Norwich graduates helped build the nation, whether it was the chief engineer that connected the Pacific and Atlantic coasts with the railroad, fathers of industrial tycoons, leaders in famous battles, or developers of the nation’s banking system. Located in the Texas Hill Country, TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas is a coed, college-preparatory school for students in grades 6-12. Its rich history dates back to 1893 when the school was founded by the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas and has grown to become the excellent academic community it is today. From honors and Advanced Placement courses, a wide range of fine art and athletic activities, and the optional, distinguished JROTC program to the school’s dedication to service and leadership, TMI is a place for students to engage, learn, and grow into the well-rounded leaders of tomorrow.
The Texas Military Institute Episcopal School of Texas is often called TMI for short. This military based boarding school is often listed in the top ten of many private school lists. A selective admission school, TMI boasts a 100% college acceptance rate with many of its alumni attending Ivy League schools.
Location and School Grounds
TMI is located in San Antonio in the state of Texas. Founded in 1893, the school has moved three times. It was first located next to Fort Sam Houston, it then moved to the downtown area of San Antonio. As the city built up and grew in population the school moved to its’ final location in the northwest edge of the city. The buildings on campus are modern and many are built completely from limestone. Buildings of interest include the Frost Athletic Center which includes a rifle range and a half-sized Olympic pool, The All Saints’ Chapel is recognized by top architectural institutes.
High school students live in dormitories which feature granite countertops, custom furniture, laundry facilities and internet access. The headmaster, physician, Chaplin and portion of teaching staff live in houses scattered throughout the campus.
Academics are divided into middle school and upper school. Middle school is grades 6-8 with a general education focus. Middle school students are day students and do not board, middle school students have an option to join the JROTC program with no credit given. Upper school is grades 9-12 with a college preparatory emphasis. This program is also supplemented with Fine Arts, Religion, and JROTC. Honor and AP classes are also available for upper school students. Upper school students do board at campus with a five day or seven day program.
TMI has an average student body of 450 and an average class size of 12 students. With a 100% college placement, past graduates have attended schools such as Baylor, Stanford, Yale and West Point. TMI is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest and the National Association of Episcopal Schools.
Application and Tuition
TMI is a competitive application process, potential students must have a good academic record along with recommendations from teachers. ISEE, SSAT, SAT or PSAT scores must also be submitted. First time students must also attend an open house and meet with the director of admissions.
Middle school tuition is $19,745. Upper school five day tuition is $37,860 and seven day tuition is $41,520. Lunch is included in all tuitions, breakfast and dinner is included for upper school. There are addition fees for day uniforms and JROTC uniforms. The school offers scholarships and tuition assistance.
The Texas Maritime Academy (TMA) is a fundamental part of the entire Texas A&M University, Galveston. This branch campus of the Texas A&M University is more focused on maritime and marine studies. The main location of the campus is 135 acres and is located on Pelican Island in the Gulf of Mexico.
Groups of Students
There are two groups of students that make up the Corps of Cadets in this academy. The first group belongs to the Merchant Marine Licensing where cadets seek to acquire licenses to become employed as Merchant Marine Officers. Students who belong to this group do not need military commitment but have the option to join the U.S. Navy Reserve.
The second group of students at Texas Maritime Academy belongs to the NROTC College program. In this program cadets are also called Midshipmen and this program offers Navy scholarships that a lot of students compete for. Compared to the former group, cadets in this particular group are committed to serve for the U.S. Navy after graduating. Both of the groups may serve different functions but they belong to the Corps of Cadets, which means that they wear uniforms attending classes and they participate in all training activities of the Corps.
What Students Learn from Texas Maritime Academy
The Texas Maritime Academy is an ideal training ground for students to teach them the proper controls and maintenance of an ocean-bound vessel. Students will participate in regular classroom lessons as well as take part in field training all throughout the school year. On top of that, they get to navigate the Academy training ship, the TS General Rudder.
This training will go on for three summers to help them earn experience on how to navigate the vessel and learn about engineering operations. By the end of the program, students will be assessed for licensure of Merchant Marine to become a deck or engineering officer or choose to work in marine transportation.
Why Should You Join the Academy?
The Academy provides the lowest tuition fees compared to all the state maritime academies. The Cadets, aside from getting their Third Mate and Third Assistant Engineer licenses, will also acquire their degree from the Texas A&M University – one of the top universities in the US that offer engineering and science programs. Faculties employed in the academy are 100% holders of a Master’s Degree or Chief Engineer’s licenses.
Students can also learn the most from their lessons because of the student-faculty ration of the academy which is 14 to 1.
How to Get in TMA?
If you wish to gain admission to TMA, you first need to apply to Texas A&M University located at Galveston via www.applytexas.org. If you apply as a License Option, you need to have a major in Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering, Marine Biology, or Marine Sciences. Applicants for NROTC can take any major as they wish.

The Marine Military Academy (MMA) can be found in Harlingen, Texas. It is a private academy for students who are in the college preparatory stage. It was established in 1965. Boys that are in grades 7-12 can enroll there. Students will also receive 1 year of post graduate study. The United States Marine Corps is not in any way affiliated with the school but its ideals and traditions are being upheld here. By chance, you can be associated with the Marine Corps only if you participate in the Junior ROTC program. The school mascot is the bulldog.

With these credentials, approximately 80% of each year’s graduates enroll in four-year colleges and universities and 20% attend two-year colleges — even if they plan to serve in the branches of the United States military. ADVANTAGES OF BOARDING SCHOOL
Boarding school students quickly learn how to perform many domestic chores and complete school assignments by themselves. They become experts at managing their time, money and resources. These students mature quickly and tend to be very independent and successful in college and life.
Boarding school students can focus better on their studies because television, video games, phones and other distractors are limited. These young scholars usually perform better academically because they live in an environment that is conducive to learning.
Boarding school students live and attend classes with people from a variety of cultures; therefore, they learn to appreciate and respect the differences in one another and live amicably. Some may even learn the basics of another language as a result of the friendships they form.
Boarding school students are known to graduate with exceptional character and demeanor. They reside in a community where traits such as honesty, respect and hard work are valued and emphasized. These pupils have a moral advantage.
Boarding school students are often exposed to a wider range of activities to broaden their learning. They may participate in common sports and activities, such as football and band, or less conventional ones, such as jiu jitsu and flight training.
Fluency in Another Language
Students whose first language is not English often become fluent in English in two semesters through language immersion. Those who stay in boarding school for at least three years typically become bilingual, meaning they can read, write and speak two languages.
Bilingual students possess a valuable skill that gives them a significant advantage in the domestic and international workforce. Studies have also shown that they generally score higher on standardized tests and demonstrate greater problem-solving skills.

San Marcos Academy (SMA) is a co-educational college preparatory school affiliated with Texas Baptists. It is not specifically a military school, but it offers JROTC options. The school received its charter from the state of Texas in 1907 and opened to an enrollment of 200 students in 1908, making it one of the oldest boarding schools in Texas. Today, SMA enrolls nearly 300 students in grades 7 – 12. Located in Texas hill country, SMA is situated near Interstate 35 between Austin and San Antonio, Texas.
San Marcos Baptist Academy offers small class sizes in order to maximize personal instruction while minimizing distractions. High achieving students are encouraged to take Pre-Advanced Placement (AP) courses as well as regular AP courses. In addition, San Marcos Baptist Academy offers on-campus dual enrollment in a variety of Hardin-Simmons University courses. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Texas Private School Accrediting Commission (TEPSAC), the Accrediting Commission of the Texas Association of Baptist Schools (ACTABS) and the Texas Education Agency for private schools (TEA).
SMA’s mission is to “Educate young men and women within a nurturing community based upon Christian values.” This is consistent with the founder, Dr. J.M. Carroll’s vision that southwest Texas needed a Baptist school.
Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC)
In 1917, SMA was granted a Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) unit and became affiliated with the United States military. From that time until 2004, all male students in grades 9–12 were enrolled in JROTC and middle school boys were also required to participate in a corps of cadets. Girls were allowed to participate on a voluntary basis. Beginning in 2004, participation in JROTC became voluntary, although American male students are still required to enroll for one semester. Despite this change, the JROTC program continues to be the largest organization on campus, with enthusiastic participation from boys and girls as well as international students. Today, the United States Army recognizes SMA as an Honor Unit with Distinction. Athletics are also important to SMA, whose mascot is the bears and whose colors are forest green and purple, referencing the mountain laurel common to the Texas hill country. Sports offered include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country and track, equestrian, football, golf, powerlifting, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
To be admitted to the school, students must submit an application, medical history and two teacher recommendations as well as official transcripts and an application fee. Before acceptance, the student must schedule a personal interview in conjunction with a campus visit. Most, but not all, students board at the school. Annual tuition ranges from about $9,500 for day students to $30,600 for boarding students with an acceptance rate of about 80 percent.
The Citadel is a four year college located in Charleston, South Carolina. While all students are required to participate in ROTC all four years, they are not required to enter the military service upon graduation. However, a large percentage of graduates do become commissioned officers in the military after graduation. This military college is co-ed and students are required to live on campus all four years. Founded in 1842, it is one of the few senior military colleges in the United States and has a rich military history. The Citadel bases their education on four pillars; academic, military, physical and ethics.
All students graduate with a Bachelor of Arts and there are five schools within this college. The School of Business Administration, School of Education, School of Mathematics and Science, School of Humanities and Social Science, and School of Engineering are offered. There is also an Honor Program for students who excel in academic achievement. This program has smaller classes taught by high ranking professors, engagement of intellectual discussion is expected. All students have mandatory study hall hours and any student who is struggling in classes will receive a mentor.
All students participate in the ROTC and wear full military uniforms during the day. Students are divided into companies and ranking is dependent upon performance and seniority. Student have both morning and evening formations, along with drill formations. In addition to their classes they learn about military warfare, leadership and weaponry. Freshmen males are required to have shaved heads until they reach their sophomore year. Students are restricted to the campus during the week.
All students participate in PT formations each day, these formations are military style exercises such as push-ups and runs. Admission to this school requires good physical standing and all students are expected to maintain excellent health.
The college has sports and competes in the NCAA Division I. Sports offered are Football, Baseball, Wrestling, Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Volleyball, Rifle, Track and Field, Cross Country and Soccer. For students who do not participate in sport teams, they must play in intramural. Intramurals at this college encourage fun physical activities such as Beach Volleyball, Inner Tube Polo and Ultimate Frisbee.
The Citadel operates on a strict honor code. Students who cheat in class or steal will be expelled immediately. Students learn teamwork and leadership through the ROTC program and mentor those below them. Students also volunteer in numerous programs within the community and world.
In the heart of the South, there is an old historical town that is the fourth oldest city in America. The town is Camden, South Carolina, and it is the home of Camden Military Academy.
The academy is classified as a Regular Institution, and it is non-denominational. Restricted to males only between grades 7 through 12, Camden Military Academy is considered one of the top rank military academies with the least expensive tuition.
Camden Military Academy’s primary vision is to accept boys with unfulfilled talents and to shape them into outstanding men for the future. Therefore, their program is centered on helping the boys master their lives successfully. The faculty and staff are committed to excellence and are focused on building up self-confidence and changing the student’s perspective on how he grasps the world around him. The State Congress of South Carolina appointed Camden Military Academy to be the official state military academy under Act number 56 in 2001. The military academy is also designated as a military institute for the Junior Army Reserves Officer Training Corp and has consistently maintained its rating as an Honor Unit with distinction by the United States Army.
Residence and Location
Located between Columbia and Florence, when traveling Interstate 20 going east, Camden Military Academy can be reached by exiting Interstate 20 and driving the 520, known also as Highway number 1 North. The address is 520 Hwy 1 North, Camden, South Carolina 29020. The academy is spread out over forty acres of land and is mixed into the town setting.
Faculty and Students
Fifty percent of the teachers at Camden Military Academy have achieved their advanced degrees. There are approximately 300 students, and the dress code is formal during school hours with the exception of free time. The students are allowed to wear civilian clothing during this free time. With a teacher/student ratio of 8:1, the average class size is 15, and classes held on Saturdays are less than once a month. All students are required to live on campus.

While the Camden Military Academy tradition dates back to 1892, operations on the current campus began with the 1958-59 school year.
Although the founding date of Camden Military Academy is listed as 1950, the school has a rich historical past, because it emerged successively out of two institutions. It began under the name of Carlisle Military Academy. The academy, which was established in 1892 as the Carlisle Fitting School of Wofford, was named in honor of Dr. James H. Carlisle who served as president of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
In 1932, Colonel and Mrs. James F. Risher leased the Carlisle Military Academy and later purchased it in 1938. From 1938 to May 1977, the school functioned as a military preparatory boarding school.
Meanwhile, visionary citizens of Camden who believed that their town needed its own school founded Camden Academy in 1950. Camden Academy operated on its own until 1958, when Col. Risher, the owner of the Carlisle Military Academy purchased the school and aligned both school together under the name of Camden Military Academy.
However, it was under the leadership of Col. James Risher’s son, Col. Lanning P. Risher, who served for thirty-seven years as the school’s first headmaster that the military school was reorganized and became a non-profit, tax-exempt institution.
CARLISLE MILITARY SCHOOL
Carlisle Military School was established in 1892 as the Carlisle Fitting School of Wofford College. This military school was named in honor of Dr. James H. Carlisle, who was for many years the president of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 1932, Carlisle was leased by Colonel and Mrs. James F. Risher and in 1938 was purchased by them. They, and later their son, Colonel William Risher, operated it as a military preparatory boarding school until it closed in May 1977.
Camden Military Academy in Camden, South Carolina was originally founded as Camden Academy in 1950 by a group of generous and far-sighted Camden citizens who felt that their town was an ideal setting for a private school. Colonel James F. Risher, the president of Carlisle Military School, purchased the facility in 1958, and the name was changed to Camden Military Academy. His son, Colonel Lanning P. Risher, was the military academy’s first headmaster, and he served in that position for 37 years. In 1974, Lanning Risher led the military school to a reorganization as a non-profit, tax-exempt institution.

Our mission is to educate and inspire our corps of cadets so that each cadet will have an opportunity to achieve his maximum potential and gain the educational foundation to succeed in college and life as a productive, contributing citizen. Athletics are important for physical well-being of our cadets. Through a full interscholastic and intramural program, we encourage team effort and cooperation. Winning while pleasant, is not all-important. Athletics can be and should be a means by which character and teamwork are built.
Self-confidence and success are inextricably related. In our military training program, as in athletics, a young man can sometimes find his first success. Such training develops poise and self-control. Believing that American is indeed dear and that patriotism and citizenship should be deep sentiments, we feel that Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps inculcates in our cadets an awareness of duty to country and respect for our national flag.
Wholesome extracurricular activities give our cadets a greater sense of self-confidence and provide opportunities for leadership. Our activities open avenues for a cadet to express himself, supplement knowledge gained in the classroom, and develop personality.
Character development is of paramount importance. Character is shaped by our example and by good daily works. While the Academy is non-sectarian, we accept it as our duty that each cadet attends his own church, and we try to encourage his loyalty to the tenets of his religious faith.

The Naval War College is often called NWC for short and is located in Newport, Rhode Island. Service members from all branches of the United States military attend this college to earn a Master of Arts. Founded in 1884, it is the oldest war college in the world and annually graduates 600 students. Long distance education is offered and it graduates 1,000 students annually. A large number of graduates have become Generals and Admirals in the military.
History and Campus
Founded in 1884, the school was a place for Navy officers to study advanced war techniques. It has since then included officers from all military branches. It is here where war gaming happens and war plans are developed. The largest war plan developed here was to deal with the Cold War and possible war with the Soviet Union, it was called the Global War Game. Due to the different nature of war in the Middle East, the college has added irregular warfare education.
The Naval War Museum is located on campus and is listed under the Historical Register of Historic Places. This building shows historical displays of the college, naval warfare and the local town. Mahan Hall houses the reading room and areas for students to study. It also has a large display of artifacts donated by prior international graduates. McCarty Little Hall is the newest building on campus and where modern technology allows students to simulate war gaming.
Officers attend this college for ten months, there are three semesters. Core subjects studied are Joint Military Operations, Strategy and Policy, and National Security Affairs. There is also International Law, Naval Warfare, Naval Command, Irregular Warfare, and Advanced Maritime War fighting.
This college offers long distance learning for eligible military members and US government workers, allowing them to complete the Naval Warfare curriculum.
The Senior Enlistment Academy is six week leadership course offered seven times a year. This is geared towards Chief Petty Officers in the Navy.
Students will fall under unaccompanied and accompanied. Due to the short nature of the program, most married soldiers will attend this college unaccompanied.
For those who will have accompanied orders, they need to contact Balfour Beatty Communities. This company handles the housing for military families who PCS to this area. There is also a Navy Lodge located here for traveling and visiting families.
The single and unaccompanied soldiers will live in the Consolidated Bachelors Quarters. It is advised to contact the Dean of Students as soon as the soldier knows he will be attending the college, space is limited.
Carson Long Military Academy was located in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania. It is now CLOSED.
Oak Ridge Military Academy is a coeducational college preparatory school based on the military model. The academy is located in the rural community of Oak Ridge, North Carolina. The school is currently the only boarding school in the state that is based on the military model. The academy is dedicated to developing leadership skills in young teenagers.
Oak Ridge Military Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The academy is also associated with several other prestigious organizations, including the Association of Military Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools.
The academy is the second oldest military school in the country, and the school was also the first military boarding school in the country to accept young girls.
Young girls were first accepted in 1854, but the school refused to admit girls between 1929 and 1971.
Students can participate in a wide variety of sports, including football, baseball, tennis, and soccer. The Drill Team is also one of the most active extracurricular activities on campus. The academy’s mascot is the Cadet.
The tuition for Oak Ridge Military Academy is significantly lower than the average tuition costs for similar institutions.
On average, Oak Ridge Military Academy accepts 59 percent of applicants. This acceptance rate is slightly lower than the acceptance rates at similar schools.
Graduates of the academy have been accepted to colleges in North Carolina, across the United States, and around the world. Reports from the academy indicate that 99 percent of graduates are accepted to their school of choice. Notable alumni include NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and George Fountain Parrott, a recipient of the Navy Cross for service during World War I.

The Marie G. Davis Military and Global Leadership Academy is a school located in Charlotte, North Carolina. This school is a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) and provides learning programs for students. Even if the academy has the word “military” in its name, it does not associate itself with boot camps. Instead, the programs here are designed to help students develop skills for a variety of situations in both their chosen profession and life.
The school now has 388 students from 6th grade to 11th grade. It first admitted students in July 1, 2008. Since then, it has received a total of 133,829 enrollees. Most of the students are males, comprising 65.5% of the student population. The average student to teacher ratio is estimated to be 10:4. The Military and Global Leadership Academy makes use of the traditional semester school schedule. It has a 66.2% graduation rate. The dropout rate is estimated to be at 5.4%.
All students are eligible to participate in different programs offered by the Military and Global Leadership Academy including the Title I Program. This pertains to financial assistance provided by state educational agencies (SEAs). With the Title I program, students who are at risk of failing or those who may not be able to continue their studies due to financial incapability may be aided by the funds from the Title I program. It is requirement that the students meet the academic standards of the state.
The school also offers reduced and free lunch. About 9.5% of the students here are qualified for the school’s reduced lunch program and 50.3% of the students today are a part of the free lunch program. Those who would like to become a student in the school should meet all of the entrance requirements. These include submitting a letter of interest and passing a placement interview. Those who fail to make the application deadline can still continue their enrollment but they will be included in the wait pool.
Other School Features
The Military and Global Leadership in NC provides challenges in academics while helping the students enhance their leadership skills. The learning programs are created in such a way that the principles of both physical and mental wellness are integrated into decision making and behavior of the children. Since this is a military school, they highly encourage children to explore the role of the national service organizations including the military to protect and develop a democratic society.
This academy aims to help children understand geography, economics, and politics. This is to prepare them for graduation and to help guide them in selecting the best preparation for college. Students are also trained to obtain a sense of responsibility which is performed by means of community service.
