United States Air Force Academy

Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the United States Air Force Academy is both a military installation and a university. It is home to more than 25,000 service members and civilians, most of who belong to the 10th Air Base Wing. This unit provides logistical and training support to the 4,400 cadets and 300 cadre members of the academy itself.

USAFA Admissions Criteria

Those who are admitted to the Air Force Academy must be between the age of 17 and 23 on July 1 of their first year of attendance. They must also be unmarried and have no dependents.

Priority is given to those with excellent academic records and high class ranking, and candidates should also score well on either the PLAN, SAT, ACT OR PSAT test.

Academic Programs

Students here will work towards a Bachelor’s of Science degree in one of several areas. Some of the more popular majors include engineering, social sciences and humanities. The first two years of the program are spent taking core classes, which involve a great deal of science. Students will also take military studies during their enrollment. Many of the professors are active duty Air Force instructors, but some are also from other branches of the military or civilians.

Athletics and Physical Fitness

The mascot of the U.S. Air Force Academy is the Falcon. This school is an NCAA Division I school, and has football, baseball, golf, basketball, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, soccer, ice hockey, tennis, swimming, water polo, volleyball and wrestling teams. Some famous rivalries include Colorado State University and the Army and Navy service academies.

In addition to NCAA athletics, students who are not involved in intercollegiate sports must participate in intramural leagues at the academy. This school offers basketball, cross-country, ice hockey, racquetball, flag football, tennis, mountain biking, softball, handball and flickerball. Cadets will also perform physical fitness training daily and are required to take an annual physical fitness test during their time here.

Cost of Tuition

Those who are afforded the opportunity to attend this school will receive free tuition, housing and meals. They will also receive a monthly stipend as long as they are enrolled. In exchange for this free tuition, graduates must agree to serve a tour of duty with the active Air Force after receiving their degree. These individuals are commissioned as officers in that branch of the military.

Summer Military Training

Prior to beginning their studies, cadets will undergo six weeks of Basic Cadet Training. This training is sometimes called “beast”, and involves learning drill and ceremonies, military customs and courtesies, and Air Force values. Cadets may also attend military training sanctioned by the Air Force or Army during the summer months. Some of this training could afford them the opportunity to fly gliders or learn survival techniques. Programs take place at various military installations throughout the United States.

Dr. Lyman Ward, a minister from New York, founded the academy as a non-profit, non-denominational institution for rural youth in 1898. Shortly after his death, the academy adopted a military department and became formally recognized as Lyman Ward Military Academy. In 2019, the academy once again rebranded into Southern Preparatory Academy. Southern Prep will continue developing young men of integrity, character, and honor.

Southern Prep encompasses 300 acres, including two five-acre lakes, two athletic fields, and a parade field. Although the school is deep in rural Alabama, it is only about 19 miles from the twin cities of Auburn-Opelika, Alabama, home of Auburn University and East Alabama Medical Center, the nearest acute care hospital.

Southern Prep offers a college preparatory diploma, and over 90 percent of graduates continue their education at a 2- or 4-year college or university. The other 10 percent typically join the military as enlisted men. In addition to regular curricula, the school also offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses as well as dual enrollment options with nearby Southern Union State Community College and Central Alabama Community College.

The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA). In addition, Southern Prep is a member of three professional organizations: the Association of Military Schools and Colleges in the United States (AMSCUS), the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Alabama Association of Independent Schools (AAIS).

Football is the favorite sport among the students at Southern Prep, whose mascot is the Rangers. However, basketball, soccer and baseball also have strong standings in the AISA AAA division. The rifle team competes in the Alabama Northeast Area Junior Reserves Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Rifle League.

In addition to sports, the school has a color guard, open to all high school cadets, which competes in JROTC competitions throughout Alabama.

Performing annually in parades across the state, the Southern Prep Band is regionally well known and respected. In fact, they perform annually in the nation’s largest Veterans’ Day parade, which is held in Birmingham.

  • Southern Preparatory Academy is a non-denominational military school for grades 6th-12th, unique among the more than 31,000 secondary schools in the United States in that there are only 13 boys boarding military schools.  The academy was established in 1898 by a New York Minister in order to bring an education to rural Alabamians who did not have the benefit of public education. The Air Force Academy High School is located in Chicago, Illinois.

It is a charter school that is part of the Chicago Public Schools system and educates grades 9th through 12th. This school focuses on physics, science and mathematics.

This school closely follows the United States Air Force program and students wear uniforms daily that reflects this.

Enrollment is open to all students in the Chicago area and one must demonstrate good academic standing and test scores. The school receives an average of 800 applicants and only accepts 150 each year.

Academics

Students study traditional subjects and follow the Chicago Public Schools requirements. More advanced classes are offered in mathematics, physics and science. The school partners with the local Adler Planetarium and often attend classes and seminars there. The biggest event of the year is the Science Fair. Students compete city wide, it is normally held at the Museum of Science and Industry. Students are expected to maintain good academic standing and be prepared for classes. Any student who does not complete homework or projects in time will have to attend a mandatory after school detention hall.

Athletic and Extracurricular Activities

Air Force Academy High School is a military prep school that offers a variety of sports for students to participate in. Cross Country, Volleyball, Soccer and Girls’ Basketball are available for all students. The Boys’ Basketball team is divided into junior varsity and varsity.

The Civil Air Patrol for Cadets is offered as an after school program. Students learn more about aerospace engineering and leadership.

If the student earns cadet officer status under this program, he can enter the Air Force as an E3 instead of E1. The school also offers band, a robotics team and the Tuskegee Airmen. Students often participate in the city’s events such as the Chicago Marathon and the Christmas Parade.

Enrollment

Air Force Academy High School only accepts applications from incoming freshmen and transfer cadets. The child should also reside within the city of Chicago. Parents should visit the Chicago Public School webpage to find information, documents needed and required application forms. This school is focused on advanced science and mathematics, high test scores and grades in this area is required. A desire to join the military or study aerospace in college is also highly recommended.

Wentworth was closed in 2017.

Commonly referred to as FUMA (foo-mah), Fork Union Military Academy is located in the village community known as Fork Union, Virginia. This location provides peace and respite from all the hustle of the city and the pressures of everyday life. To further promote positive attitudes, the academy emphasizes the importance of positive peer pressure, or leading by example.

History

Baptist minister Dr. William E. Hatcher founded the academy in 1898 to fill the need of education for students aged 14 to 17. Fork Union adopted its current independent military curriculum in 1902 and has no affiliation with any branch of the US military.  Fork Union began its affiliation with the Baptist Association of Virginia in 1913 when it became an all-male institution. 

Academics

The academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. As part of the academic and military curriculum, the academy prides itself on teaching structure, discipline, and Christian values. Boys, grades 6-12 and postgraduate courses participate in 10 different athletic programs, multiple clubs, organizations and the academy rifle team.

Athletic teams sport the Blue Devils as their mascot. Participation in these extracurricular activities is not required but offers a change of pace from daily academic life.

Structure & Discipline

The goal of the military system at Fork Union Military Academy is not to turn young men into soldiers. Indeed, we have no affiliation with any branch of the armed forces. Rather, our goal is simply to use the best aspects of the military system to teach young men the value of being responsible for their actions, of doing on their own the work that needs to be done, and of working with others toward a common purpose.

…and we have superimposed these values on our living and learning environment — in the classroom, the locker room, the dining room, and the dorm room.

At Fork Union Military Academy, our cadets are expected to tuck in their shirts, to say “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am”, to stand when a lady enters, and to open doors for others. Our cadets learn to look others in the eye, address others with respect, and speak with confidence. Our cadets are taught to “sweep in the corners” — that is, they are expected to pay attention to detail, to be accountable for their actions, and to set high standards for themselves and others.

Cadet Corps

The Academy’s student body is organized as a Cadet Corps led by cadet officers who serve as members of the battalion staff, as company commanders, platoon leaders, and in other leadership roles.

The Upper School companies include four rifle companies (A, B, C, and E), the Retan Rifles honor company (home of the Academy’s color guard and precision drill team), and Band Company.

The Middle School is organized as a battalion with two separate military companies. The Middle School battalion marches in full dress parades on campus with the Upper School battalion during special occasions and according to the regular Sunday parade schedule during the spring of the year.

Discipline

Military discipline is a constant at Fork Union Military Academy. Cadets abide by regulations of face the consequences of improper choices. Conduct expectations are made clear, and cadets are treated fairly and consistently. The primary goal of FUMA’s disciplinary system is to encourage responsible behavior while demanding that young men treat each other with courtesy and respect.

The Commandant of Cadets oversees the daily operation of the Cadet Corps and the proper enforcement of regulations through the demerit system. A cadet who receives demerits during a given month (in excess of the number allowed without penalty) must serve a penalty tour for each demerit received. This usually means a period of time spent marching during what would otherwise be his free time.

In contrast, cadets who maintain their demerit count below specific levels enjoy certain privileges, and are able to take full benefit of their free time on campus for activities, rest, or recreation.

Leadership Development

A cadet who shows responsibility, consistent good conduct, and leadership potential can earn rank – first within his company, and perhaps later at the battalion level. Cadet officers lead their platoons and companies under the direct adult supervision of the Commandant and the members of his staff, known as Tactical Officers. These cadet officers learn valuable lessons about responsibility, the use of authority, discretion, and leading by example.

In other schools, young people might gain status based on their popularity, athletic ability, or the clique they hang out with. At FUMA, rank is earned based on true merit and achievement.

The campus of Fork Union Military Academy provides a sanctuary from so many of the stresses of and pressures that confront young men today.

Located on 1,000 acres in rural central Virginia, the Academy is a beautiful and peaceful place, far from the noise and commotion of the city, the aimless adolescent wandering of the suburban shopping malls, and the powerful peer pressures of popular culture.

Positive Peer Pressure

The siren call of negative peer pressure is a strong force in the lives of young men, but at the Academy, the balance of power is shifted and positive peer pressure is dominant. The Cadet Corps is led by a network of cadet officers – young men who have achieved rank by consistent good conduct and self-discipline. These young men are expected to lead by example. The vast majority of the Cadet Corps obey the rules almost all of the time. In fact, it is not unusual for a significant percentage of cadets to complete the year without ever having to march a penalty tour.

Zero Tolerance Policy

Drugs and alcohol are dangerous influences on a young man’s life and we take very seriously our responsibility to provide a school setting safe from such problems. Cadets found to be in possession or under the influence of drugs or alcohol are subject to immediate dismissal. The use of tobacco is also forbidden on campus.

Cadet Honor System

Cadets are bound by their commitment not to lie, cheat, or steal, nor to tolerate such behavior by others. When a cadet violates this trust, he must face a council of his peers. Penalties for Honor Code violations are determined by the Commandant, upon the recommendation of the Honor Council.

Fork Union Military Academy was founded in 1898 by Dr. William Hatcher, a prominent Baptist minister. Christian values and biblical principles continue to undergird the entire program of Fork Union Military Academy.

St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy is a private, prestigious, coed preparatory school with a focus on leadership development and college preparation. St. John’s Military School is a boarding military educational institution in Kansas. With the help of the President, Andrew England, as well as the Commandant of Cadets and the Academic Dean, the students are trained to enhance both their academic and leadership knowledge. Given the fact that this is a private military school, the students are educated in a “military environment” starting from late August to around the end of May.

Noteworthy Facts about the School

Having ranked first in JROTC program in the entire United States, St. John’s Military School (SJMS) is emphasized as a prestigious educational institution in the area of Salina, Kansas. For 125 years, the school has a great history of producing gentlemen who have become leaders in their chosen careers. Since the SJMS has a high ranking in Air Force Instruction (AFI), the school gets to have up to 15 endorsements of their graduates to the USA Military Academies.

The school was a setting in the movie entitled Up the Academy, which was filmed here in 1980. Most of the film was shot in the campus grounds. The movie was a spoof by MAD Magazine about military-type boarding schools.

History and Accreditations

In 1910, a troop called Troop 1 was organized by F. John Romanes. Today, this troop is known as the first ever Boy Scout troop in American history. Romanes was an instructor at the same military school which served as the home of the boy scouts. SJMS was already 23 years old when the troop was assembled, but this was the time when the school was influenced by English Boy Scouts.

St. John’s is recognized by the Kansas State Department Education as well as the North Central Association. It is also a member of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States and the National Association of Episcopal Schools.

Sports and Activities

The school has a wide range of athletics programs for males who would like to improve on their skills. The students at SJMS actively participate in different junior varsity and varsity level competitions with other public and private institutions. Among the sports that students may get involved in are football, cross country, golf, wrestling, and the rifle team.

The school team uses the colors orange and black and is symbolized by their mascot, the muleskinner.

Students

As mentioned, the top-rating school has produced a great number of fine young men who excelled in their field. Two of them are Mark Cerney, a nonprofit organization founder and Dean Hargrove, a TV writer, producer, and director. St. John’s serves around 120 male cadets in its 10-acre campus, and their goal for the next two years is 280 cadets. Only male students are accepted and they can study here from grades 6 to 12. Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is not required for new enrollees.

Tution

Internationally, our total tuition and fees are $40,000. This includes tuition, room and board (including all meals), misc. fees, incidentals, uniforms, insurance, and a security deposit. Tuition alone is $23,180. I have attached the tuition and fees guide for your reference.

Domestically, our 2018 total tuition and fees are $34,100. This includes tuition, room and board, misc. fees, uniforms, and a security deposit.

The Marine Military Academy (MMA) can be found in Harlingen, Texas. It is a private academy for students who are in the college preparatory stage. It was established in 1965. Boys that are in grades 7-12 can enroll there. Students will also receive 1 year of post graduate study. The United States Marine Corps is not in any way affiliated with the school but its ideals and traditions are being upheld here. By chance, you can be associated with the Marine Corps only if you participate in the Junior ROTC program. The school mascot is the bulldog.

Initially known as Carver High School, Carver Military Academy (CMA) is a public high school located on the far south side of Chicago, Illinois, in Riverdale, Illinois.  Students must be from the surrounding area.

In August of 2000, Carver Area High School underwent a massive change when it became the first existing public high school in the nation to convert to a public military academy. The newly designated Carver Military Academy (CMA) welcomed about 250 freshmen cadets in August of 2000 and almost 300 in September of 2001. When the freshmen entered in 2003, the conversion was completed and all of the students were JROTC cadets. For the first time in two decades, the enrollment is on a rise, the scores are improving, and the future of Carver is exciting.

In June of 2004, Carver Military Academy graduated its first class of cadets. Approximately eighty percent of the enrolled cadets successfully completed the four year integrated academic and JROTC curriculum. In addition, in May 2006, Carver Military Academy earned its first “Honor Unit of Distinction” recognition. Which it then upheld in all subsequent formal inspection, most recently earning a 597 points out of 600 possible.

This institution strives to excel in education and in athletics while instilling a sense of pride, honor and accomplishment in its cadets while nurturing public service. The Military Model is the essence of how teaching and learning is conducted, which creates a positive culture that is more cohesive and challenging. In a structured and safe environment self-respect, leadership and partnership are promoted. This model is the uniformed standard of conduct, discipline and academics that all stakeholders are expected to comply.

The Carver Military Academy maintains an early enrollment schedule. The deadline for applying via apply.csu.edu ends near December of the preceding school year. Complete the online application form and list CMA as your first choice in secondary schools.

Although CMA is maintained in a military style, cadets are under no obligation to enroll in the military upon graduation. The academy does offer a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp or JROTC for cadets, and the students find easier acceptance into the college-level ROTC programs later, should they so desire for the financial aid and an army commission after college graduation.

Athletics and Clubs

JROTC isn’t the only extracurricular activity academy cadets are offered. Basketball, football, track and field, baseball, softball, volleyball and wrestling are only part of the sports programs the academy has available for boys or girls.

For the academically minded, cadets can join the Spanish club or become an academic decathlete. Among the JROTC offerings, cadets can learn about orienteering or fencing as well.

The Military College of Georgia, also called the University of Northern Georgia, began its existence in 1873 as the North Georgia Agricultural College.

One of only six senior military colleges in the country, the institution is the second oldest public college in Georgia.

The college boasts that it is the first in the state to grant a degree to a female graduate in its first graduating class in 1879.

It remains today a progressive, innovative institute of higher learning for both genders. Keep reading to learn more about this school.

Academic Excellence

The college’s academic program has long been renown for high standards and challenge. Undergraduates choose courses of study from four basic schools, which include schools of business, education, arts and letters and science and health professions. Students can earn undergraduate degrees and masters degrees. Different schools and degree programs may aim students to a particular campus location in Dahlonega, Cumming, Gainesville or Oconee, Georgia.

Athletic Abilities

When the North Georgia College and State University merged with Gainesville State College in 2012 and 2013, giving birth to the current University of North Georgia, the sports mascot and team name changed from the North Georgia Saints to the North Georgia Nighthawks. That doesn’t mean that sports programs were and are no longer important. The school firmly believes that disciplined competition and physical development aids in nurturing a team spirit and pride.

Men’s and women’s sports programs flourish at the Military College of Georgia. Men’s baseball, women’s softball, basketball, football and women’s tennis only begin the list of available sports teams active and enjoyed.

Extracurricular Activities

As its name advertises, the Military College of Georgia’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) has an excellent reputation. Many undergraduates opt to join this program and enter the United States Army as a commissioned officer upon graduation. ROTC isn’t the only non-academic activity possible, though.

Students who want more than classroom or official playing field activity can join numerous clubs, engage in relaxed intramural sports and attend parties and cultural activities organized by the student-elected Student Activity Board. Men and women can join fraternities or sororities to extend the college life experience.

The Blue Mountains that surround the school offer myriad opportunities to explore nature or make friends in the nearby towns as well.

Admission Application

The University of North Georgia or the Military College of Georgia offers four targeted admissions paths to enable a simplified process for virtually every prospective student. Apply under Cadet Admissions, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Studies or International Studies.

NOTE: this school may be closing…Forestville Military Academy is a charter school located in Forestville, Maryland. This military school educates grades 9th-12th, with students graduating with a general studies high school degree. JROTC is mandatory for all students and the school has been nationally recognized as one of the top JROTC programs. While the school is public and free for all students, one must apply to attend.

Education

Forestville military prep school has a military styled education, full uniform is required everyday. All general subjects are covered along with AP classes available for high achieving students. Students take SATs and ACTs for college admission in both their Junior and Senior years. The school also offers the ASVAB test for Seniors. This test is for students who want to join the military upon graduation, the ASVAB score will determine what type of job they may apply for in the military.

The school is a Brigade JROTC level, it is one of the largest in the state. All students enter as cadet rank and move up ranks when they show excellence in leadership and grades. The highest rank is the commander which is normally held by a Senior.

Athletics

Forestville has a large and popular sports program, their mascot is the Knights. Sports are divided into fall, winter and spring. Fall sports offered are cheerleading, football, golf, cross country, volleyball, boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer. In the winter there is wrestling, swim team, indoor track, boys’ basketball and girls’ basketball. Spring sports are tennis, baseball, track and softball. Students must be in good academic standing in order to play any sport.

Application

Forestville is part of the Prince George’s county public school system. It is also partially funded by the Department of Defense. Interested parents and students must fill out an application that includes an essay. Their current school counselor must also fill out an application as well with the student‘s current grades. If the student passes the first review, they must do an interview with the school. Upon acceptance, both the student and parents are required to attend an overview meeting before enrollment.

Originally located in Pine Beach, New Jersey, Admiral Farragut Academy (AFA) is a college preparatory school that instills military values in its students. The school is named after Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, the Navy’s first admiral, who famously uttered the phrase, “Damn the torpedoes; full steam ahead” at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. The school has since moved to Florida and strives to graduate well-rounded, emotionally mature young men and women. Located in beautiful St. Petersburg, Fla., AFA is only five minutes from the beach and only an hour and a half from Orlando’s many theme parks. The closest large city, Tampa, is home to professional sports teams, Busch Gardens, restaurants and other attractions.

Academics

Admiral Farragut Academy is academically challenging and offers advanced placement (AP) courses as well as dual enrollment in local colleges. In addition, AFA has a number of unique educational programs, including aviation, engineering, marine science, SCUBA and naval science, also known as Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC). 

The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS). In addition,Admiral Farragut Academy is a member of eight professional organizations, including the following: The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Small Boarding Schools Association (SBSA) and the Association of Military Colleges and Schools in the United States (AMCSUS).

Culture

Since 60% or more of the 8th-12th grade population is boarding, the students consider themselves more like a family than merely peers. Graduates refer to their time at AFA as “the Farragut experience.” The school focuses on health as well as academics and encourages athletics and other physical endeavors, such as SCUBA and sailing. In fact, students can participate in 21 different sports at AFA.

In addition to physical and academic emphases, the school has a multicultural component and hosts students from 24 different countries and 17 different states. AFA expects to graduate physically fit, well-rounded, erudite young men and women.

To be admitted to Admiral Farragut Academy, applicants must submit two teacher recommendations as well as three years of official transcripts and standardized test scores. The school is located in a safe neighborhood and guarded around the clock by campus security personnel. In the heart of the South, there is an old historical town that is the fourth oldest city in America. The town is Camden, South Carolina, and it is the home of Camden Military Academy.

The academy is classified as a Regular Institution, and it is non-denominational. Restricted to males only between grades 7 through 12, Camden Military Academy is considered one of the top rank military academies with the least expensive tuition.

Honors

The State Congress of South Carolina appointed Camden Military Academy to be the official state military academy under Act number 56 in 2001. The military academy is also designated as a military institute for the Junior Army Reserves Officer Training Corp and has consistently maintained its rating as an Honor Unit with distinction by the United States Army.

Residence and Location

Located between Columbia and Florence, when traveling Interstate 20 going east, Camden Military Academy can be reached by exiting Interstate 20 and driving the 520, known also as Highway number 1 North. The address is 520 Hwy 1 North, Camden, South Carolina 29020. The academy is spread out over forty acres of land and is mixed into the town setting.

Faculty and Students

Fifty percent of the teachers at Camden Military Academy have achieved their advanced degrees. There are approximately 300 students, and the dress code is formal during school hours with the exception of free time. The students are allowed to wear civilian clothing during this free time. With a teacher/student ratio of 8:1, the average class size is 15, and classes held on Saturdays are less than once a month. All students are required to live on campus.

We are excited to announce that graduates of Camden Military Academy can now attend college for free! Central Carolina Technical College in Camden is offering every graduate of a Kershaw County high school free tuition at the college.

While the Camden Military Academy tradition dates back to 1892, operations on the current campus began with the 1958-59 school year.

History

Although the founding date of Camden Military Academy is listed as 1950, the school has a rich historical past, because it emerged successively out of two institutions. It began under the name of Carlisle Military Academy. The academy, which was established in 1892 as the Carlisle Fitting School of Wofford, was named in honor of Dr. James H. Carlisle who served as president of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

In 1932, Colonel and Mrs. James F. Risher leased the Carlisle Military Academy and later purchased it in 1938. From 1938 to May 1977, the school functioned as a military preparatory boarding school.

Meanwhile, visionary citizens of Camden who believed that their town needed its own school founded Camden Academy in 1950. Camden Academy operated on its own until 1958, when Col. Risher, the owner of the Carlisle Military Academy purchased the school and aligned both school together under the name of Camden Military Academy.

However, it was under the leadership of Col. James Risher’s son, Col. Lanning P. Risher, who served for thirty-seven years as the school’s first headmaster that the military school was reorganized and became a non-profit, tax-exempt institution.

CARLISLE MILITARY SCHOOL

Carlisle EntranceCarlisle Military School was established in 1892 as the Carlisle Fitting School of Wofford College. This military school was named in honor of Dr. James H. Carlisle, who was for many years the president of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 1932, Carlisle was leased by Colonel and Mrs. James F. Risher and in 1938 was purchased by them. They, and later their son, Colonel William Risher, operated it as a military preparatory boarding school until it closed in May 1977.

CAMDEN ACADEMY

1955 Football TeamCamden Military Academy in Camden, South Carolina was originally founded as Camden Academy in 1950 by a group of generous and far-sighted Camden citizens who felt that their town was an ideal setting for a private school. Colonel James F. Risher, the president of Carlisle Military School, purchased the facility in 1958, and the name was changed to Camden Military Academy. His son, Colonel Lanning P. Risher, was the military academy’s first headmaster, and he served in that position for 37 years. In 1974, Lanning Risher led the military school to a reorganization as a non-profit, tax-exempt institution.

California Military Institute, located in Perris, California, is a public, co-educational school whose environment is similar that of the military — highly structured and programmed toward both personal and team development. The California Military Institute (CMI) serves the city of Perris, California and surrounding Inland Empire communities of Riverside, San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties. The combination of intensive high quality learning opportunities with the rigorous and demanding regimen of self-discipline demanded in a military environment insures that the uniqueness of our program will
continue. CMI cadets are continuing in the tradition of academic excellence, cadet leadership, patriotism, and community service. As a public charter school, CMI provides a military environment without the boot camp atmosphere.

Student Demographics

As a public school, the California Military Institute has no enrollment restriction beyond age and behavior. Boys and girls of all colors, creeds or religions are welcome within its doors. The majority of the students attending CMI are of Hispanic heritage.

Military Impact

Students are under no obligation to enter military service after graduation from this secondary school. Students must wear military uniforms, but parents are not obligated to purchase them. Most outer wear is provided at no cost. If highly polished or appropriate dress shoes are desired, that cost is absorbed by parents.

Drills, exercises, training and displays for audiences are part of military life, and those functions do find their way into student life. The time and effort these activities take are credited against either physical education credits for graduation or vocational educational credits.

Admission

The California Military Academy has no special admissions requirements or procedures. Submit complete transcripts and a current and complete shot record before the next class year’s deadline, and if there’s a spot available, it’s a “first come, first serve” acceptance policy.

If athletics are on the horizon, though, you will also need to submit the results of a complete medical physical and a sports-related insurance policy to the school before student participation outside a Physical Education class — schools sports teams — will be considered.

Football, soccer, baseball, softball and other competitive sports are available for team or individual participation.

How We Operate

CMI operates on the values of honor, courage and commitment as detailed in the Statement of Corps Values. CMI further believes that every cadet and recruit has within themselves the potential for leadership and service that will benefit our society as a whole. Activities and training opportunities at CMI focus on developing our cadets as leaders who excel at all levels of responsibility. First and foremost among the skills of being a good leader is being a good follower and CMI recognizes the value of both follower and leader.

Community service is one of the hallmarks of CMI both as a means of creating a positive identity and recognition in the community, but also as a way of developing in our future leaders an understanding of the importance of service. Cadets and recruits serve their communities in a wide variety of ways including, but not limited to, participation in civic celebrations and events, assisting charitable organizations through fund-raising or direct service, and assisting surrounding schools or similar organizations with after school programs available to all.

The qualities of maturity, dedication, trust and dependability commit Cadets of the California Military Institute to act responsibly; to be accountable for their actions; and to fulfill their obligations.

CMI is a unique educational experience combining high academic expectations and standards with a military-style environment. CMI has many unique features that set it apart from other public schools. The concept of CMI was developed and promoted by members of the Board of Trustees for the Perris Union High School District, our chartering local education agency. When first conceived, the military style structure was modeled after another charter school in Oakland, California. As with the school in Oakland, CMI is affiliated with the California Cadet Corps (CaCC) which is the JROTC program offered by the California National Guard. The Military Science curriculum that we offer our cadets was developed by the CaCC.

CMI is not a “military school” that is for troubled or at-risk cadets. CMI was created to provide educational challenges to cadets who attain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and have no significant behavioral issues. With these academic and behavioral criteria and a sense of military-style organization in place, CMI opened its doors for the first class of fifty 7th graders in 2003. Our first class of seniors graduated in June 2009. We currently serve 5th-12th grade and have a total enrollment of 1006 Military Path/ 21 Technology Path students. The California Military Institute has successfully started its twelfth year of meeting the challenge of providing a high quality educational experience for those who seek a safe, secure, motivating, and disciplined learning environment.

COURAGE is the mental, moral and physical strength ingrained in Cadets. Courage is the ability to do the right thing, in the right way, for the right reasons. It carries Cadets through the challenges of youth and aids them in overcoming fear. It is the inner strength that enables a Cadet to do what is right; to adhere to a higher standard of personal conduct; to lead by example; and to make tough decisions under stress and pressure.

COMMITMENT is the spirit of determination and dedication found in Cadets. It leads to the highest order of discipline for individuals and units within the Corps of Cadets. California Military Academy is a college-level academy established in 1930 under its original name, the California Nautical School. The institution was originally for males only, but during the 1970s, it accepted enrollment of both males and females, broadened to accept minorities. The academy became integrated with the California State University system in 1996, although it evolved into a four-year school several years earlier.

Located about 30 miles north of San Francisco, Cal Maritime, as it’s nicknamed, offers various maritime baccalaureate programs, such as marine engineering and marine transportation, which balance such general degree programs like business administration – international business and logistics, global studies and maritime affairs.

Cal Maritime itself is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and maintains additional program-related accreditations too.

Admissions

Cal Maritime channels your application for admission along specialty lines. If you are a high school graduate with no college credit, you pay a $55 application fee and submit the online application and an ACT or SAT score via csumentor.edu.

To qualify, you must have a score that meets or exceeds the California State University eligibility score, a C grade or higher in the required college preparatory courses for your desired educational path and at least a 2.0 grade point average after the 9th grade.

If you are a transfer student, the application fee and application submission mirror the first-time college student. However, if your current college is accredited, Cal Maritime will probably accept at least some of your previously-passed courses. If your school has an articulation agreement with Cal Maritime for your desired specialty, odds are good that at least most of your credits will be transferred if you meet the eligibility standards for your desired major.

Course Offerings

The California Maritime Academy offers more than four-year degrees as of 2011. Its master’s program awards the prestigious Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management and requires two years of study. For many undergrad or post-grad attendees, the online option allows freedom and convenience.

Cal Maritime doesn’t stop its reach there, though. It offers military student options, although there is no obligation to join the U.S. Coast Guard or other military branch upon graduation, an exchange program, second-degree undergrad program, returning Cal Maritime student options and even visiting students program as well.

If, however, the military service interests you, you can gain financial aid if you enroll in one of the five current programs by the Navy, Coast Guard and the Air Force.

Benedictine Military School is located Savannah, Georgia.

This all-male school is often called BC for short, it is a Catholic-based school as well. With an average student body of 335, this school educates grades 9th through 12th.

This academy is a college preparatory school, offering general studies with honor classes and AP classes.

Students also take JROTC and religion classes.

Graduates have attended top universities such as Yale University, U.S. Naval Academy, West Point and the University of Georgia.

Academics

Students take classes in English, Foreign Languages, History, Mathematics, Science, Religion and JROTC. The school also offers a variety of elective courses such as Journalism, Sports Medicine and Chorus. Most general studies classes are offered in honor and AP.

JROTC is mandatory for all Freshmen and Sophomores. It is elective for Juniors and Seniors, about 90% of their upperclassmen continue the JROTC program. This military prep school’s JROTC program is a Honor Unit with Distinction, meaning it is one of the top JROTC programs in the nation.

Athletics and Extracurricular Activities

A high number of students from this school receive sport scholarships to top universities upon graduation. Sports offered are cross country, rifle, football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, golf, tennis, soccer, track & field, swimming, lacrosse, drill team and color guard.

Extracurricular activities are offered to help further the student’s academic career and become involved in the community. Offered are chess club, chorus, photography, media, model united nations, mind benders, yearbook, sailing, band, student council and community service.

Admission and Tuition

Benedictine Military School is a highly competitive school, students interested in attending should have an excellent academic record and good ethics. Parents will need to fill out an application form and submit recommendations from the student’s Math and Language Art teachers. The student’s school must also send a current transcript. Incoming freshmen must take an admission test at the school, this test is offered twice during the winter.

Tuition is an average of $19,000 a year (may change). Active Catholics with paperwork signed by their priest are given a discount. The school also offers discounts for active military and families with multiple siblings enrolled. Other fees include lunch which is $1,100 a year, uniforms and books are $800 a year. The school offers financial aid assistance for students who are in need. Scholarships are also available, including one for students who score high on the admission test. For those who cannot pay the full tuition up front, the school offers monthly payments with no interest.

The Howe School is a college preparatory academy located on 100 beautiful acres in Northeast Indiana. This exclusive boarding school has a fantastic student to teacher ratio. Students can expect plenty of one-on-one attention. The historic campus dates back to 1884, when the school was founded. It wasn’t until 1895 that The Howe School became a military-style boarding school. In 1988, the school began admitting girls as day-school students and full-time boarding students. Howe Military Academy’s mission is to prepare global leaders by providing a rigorous education grounded in Christian values within a structured military environment.

Academics

Students in grades seven and eight follow a traditional middle school curriculum. In addition to core classes, they also begin coursework in leadership, typing, foreign languages and physical education. The Potential Achievement Rating (PAR) system is individually tailored to each student. Students are encouraged to meet and exceed their PAR scores. Over 97 percent of Howe School graduates go on to college. In addition, AP classes are also offered to dedicated students.

 

Cadet Life

Cadet Wildcats thrive under the strict military structure of The Howe School. Cadets take classes in leadership and follow a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps curriculum. Leadership, confidence, selfless service and education are all important parts of being a cadet at The Howe School. Attending The Howe School does not mean students have to join the service or attend a service academy after graduation. Many graduates do go on to military careers. Ultimately, the rigorous military structure provides students with the valuable skills they need to succeed in college and in life.

Athletics

The athletic program at The Howe School also has a military focus. Honor and integrity are paramount during organized sports competitions. In addition, a high level of personal physical fitness is always encouraged. The Howe School offers 11 different sports for students to choose from. Football, soccer, tennis, and basketball are popular choices for many cadets. Students are expected to give their personal best at all times.

St. Thomas Academy was founded in 1885 by an archbishop named John Ireland. Since it was established by a member of the church, it is only right that the school remains to be affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Located in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, St. Thomas Academy (STA) strives to guide students before they step into college with Jesus Christ as their main influence.

What Is The School Known For?

Before STA got its current name, it was first called Saint Thomas Aquinas Seminary. This was later changed to Saint Thomas Military Academy. Finally, the management agreed to give it a simple name, Saint Thomas Academy.

The school only approves male students for middle school or 7th and 8th grade and for high school from 9th to 12th grade.

The private academy is best known for its religious traditions and activities. There are approximately 690 students in this school, which is more than the average of many private schools in the area. They also offer assistance to those who are in need of financial help. School days last for six to seven hours and a total of 175 days of class for the whole school calendar.

The school is also known for being very active in engaging with the community. The cadets are all required to complete 100 hours of community service during their senior year. Many of the students also volunteer to run food drives and help local non-profit organizations throughout the year.

Students and Faculty

As mentioned, this is an all-boys school for all grades (7 to 12). All high school students are enforced to join the Junior ROTC Army. Number of students varies from 660 to over 690 per school year. The average number of enrollees accepted is around 86%, but all students graduate at the end of the school calendar.

The Headmaster, Thomas B. Mich, directs 60 members of the faculty. At this rate, the student to teacher ratio is 10:1. Most classes have around 17 students. 80% of the faculty members hold a doctorate or master’s degree.

The campus, which is approximately 72 acres of land, supports handicap accessibility specifically at the cafeteria, the middle school building, and at the O’Shaughnessy doors.

Traditions and Sports

As a member of the Roman Catholic Church, there are religious traditions practiced at the school. Each morning after the second period, high school students attend the Formation. This activity is where they all stand with their battalions. A senior member of the Campus Ministry will say the Morning Prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance from the cadet colonel or the headmaster.

There are also a lot of fun things to do especially for the sports minded, including football, hockey, swimming and diving, and basketball. The swimming and diving team is among the most notable, which has already acquired 11 championships including for this year. All in all, the school has received a total of 32 gold medals since 1975.

St. Catherine’s Academy is a boarding school in California, but it also accepts day students. Boarding or resident students consist of grades 4 to 8 only while day students can be from kindergarten to the eighth grade. The academy only accepts boys and provides additional help for children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

History of St. Catherine’s

The founder of the school was Mother Pia Backes who was also the one who established The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. At first, the school was an academy exclusively for girls. It also served as a parochial school for families within the vicinity. Then, it became an orphanage and also gave boys education. Soon enough, the school became dedicated to teaching small boys in the 1920s where the military tradition started. Before St. Catherine’s Academy’s name was given, it was first called St. Catherine’s Military School.

Faculty and Student Body

The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose remain an active part of the school. In fact, they hold administrative positions in the academy and some also teach children and provide resident care. There are around 150 students here, with the teacher to student ratio of 1:10. The average size of each class is 15 and the percentage of the faculty members with advanced degree is 64%.

There are no classes on Saturdays but everyone here is expected to dress formal when in class. The academy offers ESL courses, though, along with summer programs. Not all enrollees get to become a student here, but they do have 70% acceptance rate. Graciela Salvador serves as the Director of Admissions in this school.

Campus Facilities and Sports

The 8-acre campus is only two miles from Disneyland. The school has many facilities, including an administrative office, social hall, dining hall, swimming pool, playing field, and gymnasium. There is also an infirmary for children who get sick. In total, there are four dorms in the school for the students. Each room comes with a resident care provider, a theater, and a recreation room.

The school has a total of eight interscholastic sports offered, including basketball, golf, drill team, and soccer. The players use green and gold uniforms with the school’s mascot being the Knights.

Accreditation

The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the Catholic Boarding Schools Associations, and the National Catholic Educational Association. They are also a member of the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States and International Boys’ Schools Coalition.

The Citadel is a four year college located in Charleston, South Carolina. While all students are required to participate in ROTC all four years, they are not required to enter the military service upon graduation. However, a large percentage of graduates do become commissioned officers in the military after graduation. This military college is co-ed and students are required to live on campus all four years. Founded in 1842, it is one of the few senior military colleges in the United States and has a rich military history. The Citadel bases their education on four pillars; academic, military, physical and ethics.

Academics

All students graduate with a Bachelor of Arts and there are five schools within this college. The School of Business Administration, School of Education, School of Mathematics and Science, School of Humanities and Social Science, and School of Engineering are offered. There is also an Honor Program for students who excel in academic achievement. This program has smaller classes taught by high ranking professors, engagement of intellectual discussion is expected. All students have mandatory study hall hours and any student who is struggling in classes will receive a mentor.

Military

All students participate in the ROTC and wear full military uniforms during the day. Students are divided into companies and ranking is dependent upon performance and seniority. Student have both morning and evening formations, along with drill formations. In addition to their classes they learn about military warfare, leadership and weaponry. Freshmen males are required to have shaved heads until they reach their sophomore year. Students are restricted to the campus during the week.

Physical

All students participate in PT formations each day, these formations are military style exercises such as push-ups and runs. Admission to this school requires good physical standing and all students are expected to maintain excellent health.

The college has sports and competes in the NCAA Division I. Sports offered are Football, Baseball, Wrestling, Basketball, Tennis, Golf, Volleyball, Rifle, Track and Field, Cross Country and Soccer. For students who do not participate in sport teams, they must play in intramural. Intramurals at this college encourage fun physical activities such as Beach Volleyball, Inner Tube Polo and Ultimate Frisbee.

Ethics

The Citadel operates on a strict honor code. Students who cheat in class or steal will be expelled immediately. Students learn teamwork and leadership through the ROTC program and mentor those below them. Students also volunteer in numerous programs within the community and world.
