The college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. All Engineering Programs are accredited by ABET.

Academic Programs

The focus of programs at SUNY Maritime College is preparation for maritime careers. The school is ranked in the top 100 engineering programs in the nation, with outstanding engineering programs in Marine, Mechanical, Electrical and Facilities Engineering, as well as Naval Architecture. A Marine Environmental Science degree and a degree in Maritime Studies are offered. The school also offers Associate Degrees in Marine Technology and Small Vessel Operation.

Summer Sea Term

A unique part of the SUNY Maritime experience is the Summer Sea Term. For 60 days each summer, the Empire State VI goes to sea carrying students from the Regiment of Cadets. This program offers valuable maritime training and gives students the opportunity to visit three to five foreign ports and one domestic port each summer. Only students seeking U.S. Coast Guard licensure are included in this program.

Students

Sixty-seven percent of the student body are enrolled in the military program called the Regiment of Cadets. In order to study at SUNY Maritime for the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marines license, students must be a part of this regiment, while those who are not seeking this license have the option of joining or not joining the regiment. Students who do not choose the regiment study as civilians and do not wear uniforms. Fifteen percent of students at the college are female.

Admissions

SUNY Maritime College accepts only students with a solid 3.0 grade point average or better. For standard admissions, students must achieve an SAT score of at least 1000, and for Engineering programs they must have an SAT score of at least 1100. The acceptance rate at this school is sixty-seven percent of those who apply, which is four percent lower than the average for colleges in the U.S.

Athletics

Baseball, basketball, cross country, crew, football, ice hockey, lacrosse, mixed rifle, rugby, sailing, soccer and swimming athletic programs are offered for males. Females may participate in crew, cross country, lacrosse, mixed rifle, sailing, soccer, swimming and volleyball programs. The team mascot is the Privateer Pete.
