Military Schools in Maryland

In the state of Maryland one will find three military schools: the Forestville High School, a public military school with a specialized Military Academy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program (in Prince George’s County).

Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy, offering grades 6-12 in Southern Maryland.

And the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, which offers a four-year fully funded program where the U.S. government pays for tuition, room and board as well as provide midshipmen a small salary each month to pay for everyday expenses.

Forestville Military Academy

The JROTC high school in MD is one of several federal programs around the U.S. sponsored by the United States Armed Forces to allow young Americans interested in attending a secondary educational institution an option to receive the minimum education requirements with the intentions to have a career in the Armed Forces afterwards.

Students who participate in the JROTC program wear cadet uniforms. It’s during this time they are exposed to military life. Part of their responsibilities is to go through the JROTC textbooks, gain an education, learn basic military skills and develop authority, leadership and attend thorough on-going trainings (that can be from one to three years of taking courses).

Those cadets that stick with the JROTC program will gain a higher ranking than those who do not. Persons who complete the entire program and if joining the military subsequently, they are likely to be advanced upon enlistment in the Armed Forces. However, there is no obligation to enter the military as serve obligation is not a requirement, unlike the USNA.

Naval Academy

At the United States Naval Academy, instead, one becomes a midshipmen, where s/he receives military training and free schooling. Persons are granted a Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation and they have active duty service obligation; unless, that is, one withdrawals from the academy in their first two years – in that case they incur no military service obligation. However, those who go on to complete the four-year military schooling will need to serve at minimum five years of service.

Those that do attend USNA are among the few to be appointed by members of congress who have exceptional GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they are also considered to be well-rounded applicants. Entry in the school is difficult; this Federal Service Academy has an acceptance rate of about seven percent.

If one is lucky enough to be appointed to the only Naval Academy in America, which sits in Maryland, s/he can be sure of the fact they are at one of America’s best military schools.
