Alabama is a military-friendly state. JROTC is available in many public high schools. In addition, the state has many ROTC opportunities. Army ROTC has a presence in 10 Alabama colleges and universities. Auburn University has one of the largest Navy ROTC classes in the nation. And Air Force ROTC is available at seven Alabama Universities.

In addition to JROTC and ROTC military training, Alabama has two private military schools: Southern Preparatory Academy and Marion Military Institute.

Southern Preparatory Academy is both a junior high school and a high school. This is a small, boys-only boarding school located in Camp Hill, Ala. Marion Military Academy, located in Marion, Ala., is a two-year college for both men and women.

Locations

Southern Preparatory Academy and Marion Military Institute are both located in rural Alabama. However, they are only about 120 miles apart, and each is within 75 miles of Montgomery, Ala., the state’s capitol. In addition, Southern Preparatory Academy is conveniently located near the twin cities of Auburn-Opelika, Ala.

Southern Preparatory Academy is roughly 100 miles from either Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta or Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Birmingham. Marion Military Academy is about 80 miles from the airport in Birmingham and about 230 miles from Atlanta's airport.

Education

Ninety percent of students who attend Southern Preparatory Academy continue their education in college, many at Marion Military Institute.

Marion Military Institute, a two-year college, prepares young men and women to attend one of the nation’s military academies: West Point Military Academy in New York, the United States Naval Academy in Maryland or the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. In addition, students may continue their education and ROTC training at any other four-year institution or choose an early commissioning program (ECP) from which a student may graduate to become a second lieutenant in the United States Army.

Other Training Commands

Alabama is also home to several army and air force training commands. The United States Army has both its flight training school and its warrant officer training school in Fort Rucker, which is located near Enterprise, Ala. And Maxwell Air Force Base, located in Montgomery, Ala., is home to the Air University, which includes the Air War College.

With educational opportunities that range from sixth grade at Southern Preparatory Academy through senior-level military officers at the Air War College, Alabama stands ready to educate men and women for leadership in all branches of the United States military service.
