With all branches of the military located here, there are many retirees and veterans that work at military prep schools. Boarding schools offer five day and seven day boarding, they may also accept day students if they live locally. Some schools require the child to have excellent grades to be accepted and are highly competitive. Other schools are geared for children who need help improving their grades and attitudes.

Tuition, fees and uniforms are all required for military prep schools, prices will vary. Parents can apply for grants, scholarships and loans to help pay for their child’s education. Military charter schools are public magnet schools and do not have tuition, but parents will have to pay for uniforms.

Notable military schools in South Carolina

The Camden Military Academy is the official military school of South Carolina. It is an all male boarding school, teaching grades 7th-12th. This school is a college preparatory program and offers honor classes, AP classes and dual enrollment with the University of South Carolina. All students are involved in JROTC and uniforms are required each day. Boys are required to play a sport or take part in intramurals.

Low Country Military Academy specializes in helping troubled teens. This private, co-ed boarding school helps students raise their grades and ready them for college. This is a small school, with an average of 60 students. The staff is prior military and the school is based on the Marine Corps training.

Military Magnet School is a public, co-ed school located North Charleston. This school educates grades 6th through 12th. All students are required to wear uniforms and participate in the JROTC. There is no tuition as this is a public school, parents are responsible to pay for uniforms. Students must live within the school district and apply to attend this magnet school.
